I LIKE MIC I picked up a microphone today, from a thrift store here in town. It's a desktop thing by a company called Telex, which I've never heard of before. It has no model number or name on display, and Googling wasn't much help. No matter; it only uses a standard headphone style jack for input, so it will be compatible with Linux, no problem. I've yet to try it out, so I've yet to hear what it sounds like, but for what it cost, even if I throw it away, it's no great loss. --more-- I've bought lots of secondhand mics in my time, man and boy, and I've never gotten too lucky with the sound quality. Actually, this same place used to have an old Grundig microphone that looked VERY nice, but it had a funky plug, and I couldn't track down an adaptor, so that was that. And it's no great loss either, really, since the proof is in the ear, so to speak. If it doesn't cost very much, and doesn't sound very good, well, you get what you pay for, no? But if it costs a lot, and doesn't sound good, you feel screwed. Being the original Cheap Yankee, therefore, I'm on a quest for one that costs little (free?) but sounds nice. I place my hopes on this new old microphone. See, 'cause I've got a plan... ********** Nethack-N-Slash My samurai is still cooling his heels. I'll get back to that game soon. In the meantime, my one-move-each-per-day Go game, played with the very nice gnugo command line application, is heating up. My machine is making a bold move to take the upper right quadrant (roughly L-T, 13-19). Really, it's a romantic move in the extreme, but the bastard just might succeed. Not sure how to blunt the push, but maybe I can isolate his stones, and...wow, that has connotations...I say, maybe I can isolate his stones and keep him from gaining mass territory. My blunders number more than my wise moves so far, but it allows me approximately one minute each morning of total concentration -- something so rare in my life, apparently, that I've come to crave these moments like basic nutrients. It's not a game in that sense at all, but rather a method of meditation. Just call me LostnZen.
